This app is an adaptation of a handbook originally prepared for the Mississippi Forestry Commission by the Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University. The publication of this handbook was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Forest Service to the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

Trees (forests) play a significant role in the economy of Mississippi, covering approximately 65% of the total land area. Timber, second only to poultry production, contributes substantially to agricultural income in the state. Tree identification is crucial for professionals working in forestry and related fields. Moreover, for individuals who appreciate forests for leisure or aesthetic reasons, being able to identify trees enhances their experience. This book aims to provide value to both professionals and recreational users alike.

Tree Names

All plant species, including trees, are assigned a scientific name along with one or more common names. For instance, the scientific name for cherrybark oak is Quercus pagoda Raf., while cherrybark oak, Spanish oak, and swamp red oak are common names for the same species. Scientific names are less ambiguous and offer more descriptive clarity. In this example, "pagoda" in the scientific name highlights the pagoda shape of the leaves.

The scientific name (e.g., Quercus pagoda Raf.) consists of three components: the genus or generic name, the species or specific epithet, and the authority or the person responsible for classifying and naming the species (often abbreviated).
